Sunday Morning Thoughts

March 3, 2018

So, I haven't written a blog post in a really long time, so long I don't even want to go look and see how long. Back in the day, I would blog when I received a story acceptance at a mag, an interview, or a book review, but just as a river changes as it flees down the mountainside, so have I over the years. I don't sub short stories to magazines anymore. I'm not circulating in horror/crime writing groups like I used, and the last two years I've read more non-fiction than fiction, and writing novels take a lot longer than writing short stories, so there are less publications to write about. My kids have grown older, and even though I'm not wiping snotty noses and being asked a hundred times a day if they can have a pickle, now their cars are breaking down, they need money for gas and college and...jars of pickles. Laundry is scattered from one side of the house to the other, we still hatch ducks and chickens in the kitchen, and I often come home to find friends hanging out. Life has changed, but life is good. In fact, it is better than it's ever been.

As I write this, I'm listening/editing to Joey's Story. I've found that listening to a story is just as important as reading the story. The way language rises and falls in the ears can be different than how it rises and falls in the mind, when the two can synchronize, it's a little bit of heaven, at least for me it is.  Some of you know that I am planning on moving into the podcast arena and possibly audio market, and reading a story out loud and picking up how the language rises and falls is yet another way to edit a story. I've been preparing podcast episodes so I'll have a stock pile when I begin, and I can't tell you how often I want to go back and re edit those short stories after reading them aloud. I have forced myself not to, because a person can only do so much and because I have learned it's okay to silence the nagging little voice in the back of my mind telling me to perfect, perfect, perfect...

I would like the focus of this blog to shift to more personal thoughts, insights, story research, ect... I can't promise that it will always be exciting, but if you were to pull the curtains back and look through the window into my mind, here is will you find it.

I have a new website which means this blog is pretty fresh. You can read the old-ish blog back on www.mavskye.com, or the even older blog here. I used to have a page were you could read all my book reviews, but something happened to it. I'll post new ones here as I write them or repost.
